Solutions Visual experience concept Museum installation Projection mapping

An installation that enriches the exhibition space and provides a unique experience for the visitor. A window to another world and another time. Behind this window, the protagonist of the exhibition is visible. And not just behind it, because through the applied techniques, the lifelike mammoth sometimes even takes a brief look into the same room you are as a visitor.

Question

The museum management of Historyland felt that something was missing from their mammoth steppe exhibition space. There was a need for interaction. The only space free, however, was at the top of the wall at the back. Not ideal for a film or animation, but at the same time, a beautiful challenge! Let’s think about the possibilities and opportunities of that ‘special’ place.

This led to the concept of the installation that we placed earlier this year. An experience that surprises a visitor and invites them to linger longer in the exhibition space.

Challenges

01.
The visitor or viewer is positioned low and has to look up. This establishes the perspective, and we understand how the installation is viewed. Compare it to 3D street paintings. A fixed viewpoint. We distorted the perspective so that it feels like immersive 3D from that position.

02.
A confined space. A busy space is not conducive to telling a story. That’s why we opted for an experience that is partly informative but mainly invites visitors to linger longer. We projected a hole in the wall, creating a glimpse into another landscape, effectively enlarging the exhibition space. On the other side of the hole, a mammoth steppe is actually ‘visible.’ The addition of surround sound is crucial to provide a rich experience that seems to envelop the entire space.

03.
A sloping roof, resulting in a triangular canvas. The image around the hole is projected transparently. Therefore, we don’t need to consider a rectangular image. An even greater advantage: as a result, everything that is not transparent appears to actually come in front of the wall or support beams!

04.
Working with Sir Mammoth himself. It was a great opportunity to collaborate with the mammoth expert Dick Mol, and a challenge. When working with an expert, delivering quality and accuracy is crucial. Fortunately, Sir Mammoth is very pleased with our work.

05.
An evolving exhibition. Like any museum, things may change or be added to the space. The installation is modular and can easily be enriched with more inhabitants of the mammoth steppe. Imagine it yourself, whose head would you like to see poking through the wall?
